Le Tour de France Celebratory Champagne Brunch

Tomorrow is the last day of Le Tour de France 2009 and it is a Sunday–what a great reason to host a brunch… to enjoy a Sunday morning while toasting the Tour de France riders as they pedal down the Champs Elysée. Unlike the Tour riders Team Royal Tart will be enjoying their Sunday and will suffer no sore muscles on Monday.

Serve French inspired faire and Champagne of course. A superb brunch menu would include the likes of quiche or omelets (both French and very brunchy), Brioche toast (also very French), yogurt & fresh fruit and French pastries. You can pick up all or most of the menu already made at your gourmet market or you can make it yourself. If you’re not inclined to serve a large brunch use some of the suggested menu or create an omelet bar which would be an entertaining way to enjoy the Tour and Sunday brunch as would a low key TV friendly menu of a selection of French cheeses, olives, French bread, fresh fruit, sliced meats and pastries.

Serving Champagne in a beautiful glass or flute would be ideal as there will be multiple toasts and much Champagne drinking. Check out these beauties for next year. You can purchase them now and use them for several occasions and then pull them out for Le Tour de France 2010.

May the best rider win!

Creating an Outdoor Party Oasis with Lighting

Creating an outdoor oasis for your next summer party is easy if you follow the magic 1,2,3. Royal Tart has pulled its summer party planning and decorating tips together for you to follow so that hosting your next outdoor party is easy and enjoyable.

Think of your senses when you are decorating for your outdoor party. You know senses? touch, smell, sight, audio (taste is the fifth sense but this is a blog about decorating we deal with taste all the time in our blog—check out our blog archive or our Recipes section on our Royal Tart website at http://www.royaltart.com/tips.html). In this blog we will deal with lighting–which may seem unimportant but really is a backbone to great celebrations.

Gone to The Beach Votives

Like any party lighting should include mood lighting as well as task lighting. You want everyone to look their best, enjoy the ambience and be able to locate the restroom when the sun goes down. To that end, hang twinkle lights or funky lanterns overhead and in flowerbeds (where people won’t walk on them but can enjoy their subtle twinkle). Turn on the lights before dusk for a subtle transition from day to dark. In fact, light your candles and torches at dusk as well.

For your buffet table and bar add large hurricanes and or candle lanterns so that your guests can see what they are serving themselves.

For the dinner table and lounge areas decorate with clusters of votives or small hurricanes.

If your party area is large you might think of torches to help form an outline of a room and to provide ambient light. Plus, unless you are hosting a black-tie event in the backyard torches just scream summer party fun.

And don’t forget the fire pit or outdoor fireplace. An outdoor fire not only provides dancing firelight but is also great at keeping guests warm, adding a focal point for after dinner conversation and providing a cozy, relaxed atmosphere.

Oh, and if you are grilling or using the barbeque don’t forget a grill light if you are cooking after dark.

Cheers,

Tricia

Impromptu Bastille Day Celebration

It’s Bastille Day––or as the French call it, “le 14 Juillet”––today and the Champs-Élysées will be party central with fireworks, parades, speeches, and joyous cries of “Viva la France!” to mark the storming of the Bastille in Paris on July 14, 1789.

Francophiles worldwide will drink champagne, eat crepes and enjoy stinky cheese. Invite your friends over for an impromptu, albeit rebellious, celebration. As a dinner party menu: Toast to all that is worth fighting for with a glass of Champagne; serve imported French cheese and French wine for HORS D’OEUVRES; a savory soufflé or savory crepes for dinner and a nice bowl of fruit and crisp flaky Palmiers for dessert (you may purchase the entire menu at your local gourmet market on your way home tonight).

palmier-image.jpg

But of course, you should pull out all your French inspired tabletop dishes and linens– think Provencal prints or French colors of blue, white & red. Lay your rarely used French china atop your pretty French table linens; serve wine in juice glasses.

If you are fresh out of French inspiration check Royal Tart’s Provencal Limóne Celebration. It is a très chic nod to the French with very functional plates.

Most importantly enjoy Fête Nationale.

À votre santé,

Sensational Summer Citrus Centerpiece

Need a green, inexpensive and easy summer centerpiece for your next entertaining event? How about using all of the citrus and other golden hued fruit available in the markets now? You can make a single fruit centerpiece such as the one pictured with just lemons. Royal Tart used this as a centerpiece in our Provencal Limon Celebration. The impact of a single item can be stunning.

lemon-centerpiece-300x300.jpg

You may also choose to make a multi-fruit centerpiece such as the one Better Homes & Gardens displayed. They suggest using fruits with golden hues such as pears, apples, kumquats, lemons and kiwis. Piled high on a compote or rimmed cake stand, this fruity assembly forms a sculptural table display. Garnish with herbs and tie a ribbon around the stand and you have a quick and fabulous centerpiece to enjoy now and eat later.

Instant Summer Cocktail: Citrus Vodka Tonic

It’s summer time which means sunny warm days and sultry nights. It means we need a summer cocktail; one that is lighter and brighter than our standards. To that end, I thought I would share my new favorite super easy summer cocktail. It’s so easy you’re going to laugh but then you are going to try one and find that you have created an instant party a nod to summer. Share the cocktail with all your friends and neighbors and you will be a cocktail superstar.

image0011.jpg

Citrus Vodka Tonic Recipe:

Fill an old fashioned glass with cubed ice to the rim; pour 2 oz Absolut Ruby Red Vodka into the glass; fill the remainder of the glass with tonic water. Slide in a pretty stir stick and you’re done—dazzling cocktail 101. A sprig of mint, a slice of orange and a drop of red food color adds visual pizzazz if you use the cocktail for entertaining.

This is a great summer drink when unexpected guests come by or you have an impromptu barbeque. Of course if you have a little advance notice this cocktail would be right in theme with Royal Tart’s Orange Crush Barbeque. A light breezy nod to stylish outdoor entertaining made easy.

Cheers,
Celebrate with Firework Cupcakes

Here’s a fun July 4th dessert–Independence Day Fireworks Cupcakes—really when are cupcakes not a fun dessert? My son and I made these cupcakes for his birthday and they were a big hit. I think they would be especially cute served at your next patriotic picnic or barbeque.

web-small-cupcakes-for-maks-6th-birtday-cropped.JPG

We used boxed cupcake mix. We chose the cupcake mix with the rainbow or confetti dots inside as they reminded us of little explosions inside the cupcakes. If I were hosting just adults or real foodies I would make a luscious gourmet cupcake but if you are serving a crowd, don’t have time or interest, boxed cupcake mix is just fine as is purchasing some cupcakes frosted with vanilla frosting, (I saw patriotic cupcakes at the grocery today for $7.99 a dozen already frosted and sprinkled). Insert a red, white & blue sprinkled lollipop. It’s really easy but if you are making 40 of them as we did it is a bit time consuming start a couple of hours before you are serving them or create them tonight for tomorrow’s event.

Directions:

Frost Cupcakes with vanilla frosting if not purchasing cupcakes
Sprinkle jimmies lightly around the edges of the cupcakes or have your child do such
Place a jellied fruit ring in the center of the frosted cupcake
Moisten a lollipop with water
Dip wet lollipop into a small cup of sprinkles
Insert dipped lollipop into center of cupcake inside the jellied fruit ring

Fireworks cupcake decorating tips:

Moisten the lollipop by dipping it into water before you swirl it in sprinkles. Make the dunk into water and the dunk into the sprinkles in quick succession. And make sure the lollipop gets fully submerged in both water and sprinkles.
You cannot re-dunk sprinkled lollipops into water or the sprinkles come off and you have a big gooey mess.
The sprinkles get clumped and sticky after you submerge a wet lollipop in them, so pour the sprinkles into many different small containers so you can throw out the gunky sprinkles and move on to a clean tub.
Purchase a lot more sprinkles than you think you will need. We purchased about 2 cups for sprinkles for 40 cupcakes.
Dum dum brand lollipops are the right size for traditional sized cupcakes. Tootsie Roll Lollipops are too big.

I hope the fireworks in the night sky are as cool as your firework cupcakes!

Cheers,

Tricia

Perfectly Patriotic Punch

Royal Tart has the perfect punch to serve at your 4th of July picnic or barbeque. The punch is Cherry Limeade Punch and it packs a punch. We serve it as a summer cocktail but it is especially perfect as an Independence Day cocktail because it is red.

image001.jpg

Ingredients:

24 oz Cherry Vodka
which is about 1 750 m bottle (we use Three Olives brand)
12 oz of frozen limeade which is a 12 oz can (we use minute maid brand)
48-60 oz of lemon-lime soda such as Sprite or 7-Up
3 oz Grenadine
3 oz Maraschino cherry juice
Maraschino cherries for garnish

Directions:

If you have time, freeze the cherry vodka and the Maraschino cherries. If not you will need more ice which will water down your punch a bit so use less lemon-lime soda. If the limeade is still frozen dump it into the bottom of your punch bowl or cocktail server. Muddle it. Then dump in the cherry vodka and the Grenadine and Maraschino Cherry juice. Mix carefully. Just before your guests arrive add the lemon-lime soda. Mix with other ingredients. Add the ice to your punch bowl or cocktail server. Add the cherries as a garnish either on the side in a decorative bowl or place them directly into the punch bowl.

As with all recipes, alter this keeper to your taste. You can increase or decrease the cherry juice and Grenadine to make the cocktail less cherry tasting, increase or decrease the lemon-lime soda for alcohol content.

Whenever we serve this it runs out long before our guests are ready for it to be gone.

Cheers,

Tricia
